Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

ACEs are traumatic events in a child’s life from birth to 18 years that have a lasting effect well into adulthood.

Data show Idaho ranks ahead of the broader United States for children experiencing four or more Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) fall into three categories: abuse, neglect and household dysfunction.

Multiple and repeated exposure can increase the risk for chronic disease, mental illness, violence and being a victim of violence, however, it’s important to understand that risk factors do not have to be predictive.

The more protective factors that exist in a child’s life, such as connection to a caring adult, the negative impact of adversity can be decreased.
